The world says, "Big dreams are born from small beginnings," and today, I am sharing the story of Delhi's first hospital. It all began in 1860 when Mrs. Priscilla Winters, headmistress of St. Stephen’s Church, founded a small dispensary on the banks of the Yamuna to provide healthcare services. Despite limited resources, her vision was grand, and by 1864, with the help of trained nurses, this humble dispensary evolved into a hospital with just six beds and a nursing training program.
Though Mrs. Winters passed away in 1881, her legacy continued. Inspired by her dedication, Lady Dufferin, the British Viceroy's wife, officially established St. Stephen’s Hospital in 1885, expanding its services and outreach. Today, this hospital stands as a testament to those early efforts, offering modern multi-specialty care in pediatrics, cardiology, and gynecology, while continuing to uphold its commitment to the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of its patients.
