An Air Force doctor, a highly decorated air force veteran, mountaineer, conservationist, writer…you would simply be amazed at the number of hats that Air Marshal LK Verma wears, and that too with such ease and grace that anyone is awestruck at his zeal, commitment to his cause and stamina. Indeed he is
a role model for the children, youth as well as the adults of the world! This unique personality has really lived a life full of devotion, compassion, adventure and now commitment. As a doctor with the Indian Air Force, his entire life has been spent in serving the nation and serving humanity. And now, in his new avatar, he is doing his bit for serving the environment! What more can a person ask for and dream of for leading the most purposeful life? A doctor by training, he completed his medical studies from Patna Medical College. He is also a post graduate in Environmental Science and has been awarded Ph.D by Intercultural University, the Netherlands. In an illustrious and distinguished career in armed
forces spanning about four decades, he held various assignments at different Stations and Headquarters, and retired as Director General Medical Services (DGMS) of Indian Air Force. He has done pioneering work in the country in the field of Hospital Waste Management. For the first time in India, a "multi- option approach" for proper hospital waste management was conceived by him; and successfully applied at Air Force Hospital Bangalore, as a WHO Pilot Project, which was further augmented by equipment supplied by the Ministry of Defence. He is recognized the world over for his academic contribution in the specialty of Hospital Waste Management, and has been holding workshops, and lecturing all over India,
and abroad, as invited speaker. Air Marshal Verma has won many laurels and has been decorated for gallantry and bravery by the government. His greatest honor was getting the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) by the Supreme Commander of the armed forces, the President of India for extraordinary service of high order. Air Marshal Verma has a varied achievements and accomplishments to his credit. Always an adventurist by heart, he had during his peak of his career participated in a couple of mountaineering expeditions. He is a trained mountaineer and paratrooper and completed done courses in jungle survival and counterinsurgency. Another aspect of his personality is his deep interest in literature and writing. Being a prolific writer in English and Hindi, he has authored many books. His latest book on Karma has been appreciated in literary circles. For his contribution to literature, he has been awarded the 'Lt Gen KS Master Oration' Award (Service oriented) and 'Premchand Smriti Puraskar' (on Hindi Literature). Today, the Air Marshal is doing his bit and totally devoted and committed to preservation of environment and arrest of its degradation. Air Marshal Verma who is a highly respected authority on healthcare waste management issues was the founding president of the Indian Society of Hospital Waste Management. He presided over the society for ten years and has seen it go from strength to strength year on year. He is indeed a source of great inspiration and a role model for all people.
