Tazurba | RD Malik | Don't just spend money, but spare time for your kids
In the ninth episode, Radio Dwarka invited RD Malik to its studio. He has finished an inning of active service life as a teacher, and in the second inning, he is actively pursuing his passion for teaching by educating children hailing from the lesser privileged class.
Born in a farmer's family in a village in Sonepat, Malik completed his early schooling there before moving to the Capital for education and job. His first posting was in a school in Maidan Garhi and during his service period, he has served in various schools in different parts of the city.
He shared his views and opinions on children's education, school system, the role of parents and teachers in shaping country's tomorrow.
He told that children tend to drop out from school mostly because the child's parents are unable to pay the fees, buy books and uniform. "These worries are a parent's but should not impact a child's academic future," he said.
He seemed visibly upset at the thought of how older girls of the house-helps tend to miss their schooling as they have to double up either as an earning member or have to take care of their younger siblings at home. He is regular at centres run by an NGO Vigyan Vijay in West Delhi where such children are provided with an opportunity to continue their studies, unhindered and uninterrupted.
He doled out invaluable bits of advice for parents — if parents want to spend something, it should be time and not money. He urged parents to avoid imposing their wishes on their children. Parents should focus on their children gaining knowledge and not just rote learning, he advised. To make the most of the experienced hands such as retired teachers in their neighbourhood, parents should seek help from them if they tend to notice unruly behaviour in their children. "The teachers are a storehouse of experience, and it will come in handy and serve as a timely corrective measure for parents and children alike," he said.
