Tajurba | Dr Bharat Bhushan | 'Drug addiction is a chronic relapsing behavioral disorder but curable'
In the fourth episode, Radio Dwarka invited social activist and homeopathic physician Dr Bharat Bhushan, who works in the field of drug deaddiction and rehabilitation, to its studio. Dr Bhushan lives in Janakpuri and runs his NGO, Muskan Foundation, at Sector 19, Dwarka. "Drug abuse is a complex disorder. Age is no bar. A person as young as eight years can fall prey to it. Family environment plays a major role in leading a person to addiction. Most addicts confess to taking up drugs because of peer pressure. Lack of supervision at home also makes children go astray," he says. Drug abuse leads to a lot of problems such as HIV/AIDS, crime, etc. More than 7.5 crore people are drug addicts in our country noted a Government survey conducted in 2004. But there are only around 400 organisations working for rehab and deaddiction in the country. The Ministry of Health runs 120 deaddiction centres at government-run hospital's department of psychiatry across the country while the Ministry of Social Justice supports around 400 NGOs. But a lot more needs to be done by the government, NGOs and individuals. "It is a complex phenomenon. A drug addict needs a holistic treatment to cure him at all levels - physical, emotional, mental, behavioral, occupational, legal and social," he says. The symptoms are similar to TB, diabetes, and bronchial asthma, he told. "It is a chronic relapsing behavioral disorder. It can be managed but needs to be continuously monitored to avoid relapse," he says. According to him, an addict can be treated at OPD, but till the time, family and society are involved, he is bound to show a relapse. He urged parents to take time out of their busy schedules to be with their children.
