'Stop tobacco consumption to prevent cancer'You need a browser with JavaScript!
Cancer is a preventable disease. It can be brought down by almost 50% by cutting down the consumption of tobacco alone, be it smoking or non-smoking. "Tobacco is a primary cause of lung cancer. It contributes to around 90% cases but not the sole reason. It can be occupational too, but smoking causes maximum harm," says Dr Swarupa Mitra, a Senior Radiation Oncologist at the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre. She has more than 15 years experience in treating cancer patients with advanced technologies.
Consumption of tobacco alone is an open invitation for cancer. "Smoking both active and passive is equally harmful. It is never late to stop smoking. Quit it, sooner the better," says Dr Mitra.
First and second stages are curable, but advanced stages have minimal chances of recovery. "Often people tend to ignore initial symptoms and reach a doctor only when the condition worsens," she says.
