Dr Gaurav Kharya, a paediatric haematologist, immunologist and oncologist at Artemis Hospital, Gurugram, explains the nuances of his specialisation in medicine.
He also highlights the difference between thalassemia major and minor, and how one can prevent its occurrence. "At the time of marriage, one must check for the presence of thalassemia's trait in the prospective bride and groom," he says.
If the child still has it, there are transfusions and medication that follow. The other way to provide supportive care then one can look for a bone marrow donor. "But it is not an easy path to tread as it takes a toll on the finances, and can drain one mentally, physically and emotionally," he adds.
