Radio Dwarka invited Dr. Inder Kasturia to its studio to know more about diabetes, its symptoms, diagnosis and probable ways to prevent it.
Elaborating further, Dr. Kasturia said that there are two major types of the disease; while Type 1 afflicts youngsters whose pancreas doesn't produce insulin at all and Type 2 which is also common among the younger generation these days.
"A blood sugar test is not always the final word; there are a couple of other tests as well to determine if a person is suffering from diabetes or not," he said.
Lifestyle management can help control diabetes to a large extent, and it involves diet control. "One should avoid sweets, carbohydrates, and high-calorie foods altogether. And trust me, it is a healthy way of eating and living. One must include physical activity in daily routine and stay away from the stress that goes a long way in keeping sugar levels under check."
Positive management of diabetes involves regular screening of the target organs such as ECG for the heart, neuropathy for nerves, fundus examination for the eyes, kidney function test for the kidneys, etc.
"These days, the treatment of diabetes has been individualised, and the patient is advised or administered drugs keeping in mind his requirement, lifestyle, body weight, etc.," he said.
It is a good idea to keep a glucometer handy at home and office. The patient should keep a candy or sugar with him always. "Also, the patient should always carry a laminated card mentioning all the details about him and his disease, emergency contact numbers of his doctor, friends and family members in case of an untoward incident. It would be helpful in case of a medical emergency," Dr Kasutria advised.
