Radio Dwarka invited Dr Rahul Bhargava, Director and Head of Stem Cell Transplant, Artemis Hospital, to know more about blood cancer, its types, symptoms and cures.
Dr Bhargava dispelled the prevalent misconception that blood cancer is a death sentence and cannot be cured. "There are 25-30 different types of cancer. Of these, 20 types of blood cancer can be detected early, and one can live long. A patient needs to know what type of blood cancer he or she is suffering to get over the morbid thought of death, live and fight out cancer."
He said that "we need to be intolerant towards our bodies. It will help detect cancer at an early stage. One must be aware of our bodies. Any form of health issue such as weakness, backache, headache, lump, cough, etc. needs to be thoroughly examined by a doctor right away."
Treatment will follow diagnosis, he told. "Today, targeted therapies are available. There are three types of treatment for blood cancer: Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy and Surgery (bone marrow or stem cell transplant)." In the days to come, the treatment will be more effective and affordable, he said.
In a bone marrow transplant, there is no surgery involved. "It is as simple as a blood transfusion. It costs Rs 8-10 lakh at a private hospital," he said.
