Stage helps hone and perfect one's acting skill, says actor Jhol
Radio Dwarka caught up with actor Banwari Lal Jhol, who hails from Delhi, and has been a familiar face on all three mediums-theatre, television and big screen.
In his early years, he loved mimicking people around him and that he says laid the foundation for his acting career to some extent. His father, a small-time businessman, never appreciated the idea of acting as a career. But unmindful of his father's resentment, Jhol pursued it with ardour.
He made his foray on stage as an actor with a one-line role in Ram Leela that remains his most memorable one till date. "It helped me get rid of stage fright," he said. The veteran Delhi-based actor got his first break on television as a mime artist. "That changed my father's perception towards me, and I suddenly earned a lot of respect for taking up acting as a career."
With many plays to his credit, Jhol honed his acting skill and soon became a regular face in Delhi's theatre circle. "Performing on stage is different in many ways. It is a perfect school for anyone interested in learning the nuances of acting. My first one was Mera Naam Joker with Shobha Khote. The play was staged across the globe. And I acted in many plays after it."
Soon television beckoned him, and he left an indelible mark with many memorable roles in serials telecast on Doordarshan.
He came to the City of Dreams with a lot of expectations, but he wasn't lucky in getting work. After a lot of struggle, Jhol made his debut on the big screen with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer Bazigaar. The role helped him take a small step in the cinematic world.
Since then, he has come a long way and acted in many movies and television serials. His next one is a Mime Show to be telecast on a newly launched channel Tata Sky. His next film is a role based on Charlie Chaplin. "But there are a lot of roles and shows in the offing," he said.
"Maximum City embraces and cares for people who are gifted and talented. If you have it in you, come to Mumbai, take an audition, and I'm sure there will be no looking back for you," he advised budding actors.
